19 YO Rhodes Scholar On What Makes You Stand Out

Ever wondered what it takes to stand out in the midst of 100’s of applicants and win that prestigious college admission or a scholarship or any interview. Great preparation one may think. But when does one start to prepare a week, a month or a year prior?

Meet Ritika Mukherji the youngest awardee of the Rhodes Trust scholarship in 2022. “Ritika Mukherji, a final year BSc Zoology student from Miranda House, New Delhi, was just 19 when she was selected by the Rhodes Trust for a fully funded scholarship to pursue postgraduate research at Oxford University in 2022”

Ritika narrated her journey in an interview with Divya Nair for Rediff.com.

“I am interested in sleep physiology and the metabolic level studies of sleep patterns and related states,” the young achiever tells Divya Nair/Rediff.com.

Ritika credits her success to her early interests in music, sports and reading. Regular dinner table discussion with her mother and long chats with her mentors helped her bring out the ‘Why’s’ in the application.

An interesting aspect of Ritika’s story is how she used the pandemic to her advantage. Online research projects contributed to the clarity she had about her interests and approach.
