Addressing Confusion and Concerns around CUET 2022

Ever since UGC announced CUET 2022, there has been a lot of confusion among students regarding its pattern and syllabus. Many are unclear whether CUET is mandatory for admission to their dream university/college.

At the same time several educationists have raised serious concerns about the impact of this decision.

NTA and UGC officials have spoken to leading newspapers and addressed these issues. Here is a quick compilation of the same.

Is CUET 2022 different from CUCET being conducted by NTA so far?

CUET is essentially an upgraded version of CUCET. While CUCET was required for admission to about 12 National universities, CUET will be needed for more than 45 National Universities. Refer to this India Today article for more information.

Will the grade 12 marks carry any weightage?

While UG admissions to participating universities will solely happen based on CUET merit list, some universities may decide to use grade 12 marks as an eligibility criteria.

What will be the pattern and the syllabus for the exam?

While detailed official notification is not out yet, UGC chairperson Prof M Jagadesh Kumar provided some insights while talking to Indian Express.

  • CUET will involve 2 sessions of nearly 4 hour duration each.
  • For each session students have to choose language and domain subjects.
  • The exam will be based on grade 12 NCERT syllabus
NCERT being a base for the exam, state board students will be at a loss.

In response to this concern, while talking to The Print NTA Director Vineet Joshi has clarified that CUET will have a ‘Model Syllabus’ based on both NCERT and State boards.

CUET will encourage coaching culture just like JEE and NEET.

To this concern again NTA Director Vineet Joshi assured that CUET will not be anything like NEET or JEE. The exam will be much simpler and much less competitive since the number of available seats for UG courses is much higher compared to engineering or medical courses.

When will the registrations begin?

The registration portal will tentatively open in April. Soon an official announcement of the pattern, choice of subjects and a list of participating universities will be published.
