When I was about to enter college, many students knew a few areas like science, commerce, arts, engineering and medicine. The scenario has changed now, as many new fields have emerged.
A large number of children are graduating at the same time. However, due to a lack of development of other required qualities and awareness, there are difficulties in getting a job despite having a course degree.
Hundreds of students pass degree exams in a single year. If a company wants to hire selected kids, why should they choose you?
Along with a thorough knowledge of your graduation field, other skills that are not included in the curriculum are required to become employable.
Let us see what these other essential qualities are:
- Many students are not confident enough to speak English. They possess good knowledge but fall behind due to language proficiency. Although English is not the mother tongue, most companies today require verbal and written communication skills in English. Thousands of books and information are available in this language. It takes time to speak and write at least moderate English, and hence one must spend some time practising.
- Solving questions based on intelligence/aptitude tests: Many companies ask questions based on the IQ test in interview rounds. There are two parts to this test and one part is based on this IQ test and the other is based on the subject knowledge.
- Qualifying those interview rounds requires the practice of such questions. Unfortunately, this topic is not a part of our curriculum; that’s why students can face some difficulty while answering aptitude based selection tests.
Additional skills:
- This includes things that complement the main topic. There are many courses available on the websites like Edx, Coursera, and NPTEL (free and paid).
- The certification courses related to your subject can be done during the three years of graduation. Definitely, it will help differentiate your resume from others.
- For example, if physics is a degree subject, programming languages like Python Programming C ++ programming can be helpful. If you have a degree in Biology, you can develop additional skills by taking courses related to that subject.
- A foreign language can add significantly to your skills.
- If you do additional courses according to these subjects, you have better chances to get a job.
To choose these additional topics or courses, you can take help from job portals where you will get some idea about the needs of the industry. You can compare your curriculum with their requirements and choose the courses wisely.
As well as some other essential things like computer knowledge, good knowledge of Microsoft Office sets you apart from other people.
The point is three years of graduation is a long way to go. You may not find most of the above things in the curriculum.
Now that the winds of online education are blowing, it saves a lot of time to study, but it can be used here to learn something new and be beneficial for your career.
